Everything a beginner needs to know about dynasty fantasy football
Key Terms
Dynasty
A league format where you keep your players year after year - unlike redraft where everyone picks fresh every season. Your roster is something you build year over year.
Market Value
FantasyCalc is a crowd-sourced player value database. Think of them as the "price guide" for what players are worth in trades. Higher number = more valuable.
Startup Draft
The initial draft where all players are available and everyone builds their roster from scratch. Usually a snake or auction format. This is the foundation of your dynasty.
Rookie Draft
After the NFL Draft each year, dynasty leagues hold a rookie draft to add incoming NFL rookies to rosters. Usually 3–5 rounds. First-round picks are the most valuable.
SuperFlex
A roster spot that can be filled by any position including QB. In SuperFlex leagues, QBs become far more valuable because you can start two of them.
PPR
Points Per Reception - a scoring setting that gives players a point for each catch. Full PPR = 1 point/catch. Half PPR = 0.5 points/catch. This boosts WRs and pass-catching RBs.
Trade Deadline
The cutoff date after which no trades can be made for the rest of that season. Before the deadline, managers scramble to either buy help for a playoff run or sell veterans for future picks. In dynasty the market reopens in the offseason, which is usually the busiest trading window of the year.
Strategy Basics
Contender vs. Rebuilder
A contender has a veteran, proven core and is competing to win now. A rebuilder is trading veterans for youth and picks, giving up on the near-term to build a future dynasty.
Sell High
Trading a player when their perceived value peaks - often after a hot stretch or career year. The goal is to get more back in trade than they'll realistically deliver going forward.
Buy Low
Targeting players whose value has dipped due to injury, poor usage, or bad recent performance - but who you believe will bounce back. You get them cheaper than their true talent level.
Age Curve
Different positions peak and decline at different ages. RBs peak 24-26 and fall off hard around 27-28. WRs peak 25-28 and decline through their late 20s. TEs mature slowly and often produce best after 27. QBs age slowest and hold value into their mid-to-late 30s. Never compare raw ages across positions: a 27-year-old QB has a longer runway than a 24-year-old RB.
Pick Capital
The number and quality of future draft picks you own. Strong pick capital = flexibility and upside. Rebuilders accumulate picks; contenders spend them on proven veterans.
Devy
Short for "developmental" - some leagues allow managers to draft college players before they enter the NFL. High risk, high reward. Not available in all leagues.
The Golden Rule
Never trade young talent for aging veterans unless you're competing for a championship right now. Youth and picks are dynasty currency - spend them wisely.

What the advanced metrics mean - and why they win leagues
Target Share
The % of a team's passes thrown at one player. Why it matters: volume is the most stable predictor of fantasy points year over year - talent gets you targets, targets get you points. A WR at 25%+ target share is an alpha regardless of last week's box score. Use it to buy players whose role is elite even when their recent scoring isn't.
YPRR (Yards Per Route Run)
Receiving yards divided by routes run - efficiency independent of play volume. Why it matters: it strips away offense speed and game script. A YPRR above 2.0 is genuinely good; above 2.5 is elite. It's the sharpest tool for spotting a talented receiver stuck in a bad offense - the exact player who breaks out when the situation changes.
Route Participation
The % of team dropbacks where a player ran a route. Why it matters: you can't catch passes from the bench. High YPRR on LOW route participation is a trap - a specialist, not a starter. Elite fantasy WRs live at 85%+. Check this before buying any "efficiency breakout."
Air Yards Share
The share of a team's total downfield passing distance thrown at a player. Why it matters: air yards are opportunity for BIG plays. A player with high air yards but low production is often unlucky, not bad - regression works in your favor. Buy high air yards + low TDs; sell the reverse.
Snap Share
The % of offensive plays a player is on the field for. Why it matters: it's the earliest signal of a role change - snaps rise BEFORE production does. A rookie RB going from 40% to 65% snaps is about to get priced up; beat the market to it.
Positional Scarcity
Why a TE ranked #3 at his position can be worth more than the WR ranked #20. Why it matters: you win by outscoring opponents AT EACH LINEUP SLOT. The drop-off from elite to average is massive at TE and QB (in SuperFlex), tiny at WR. Pay up for cliffs, not for depth.
Buying the Dip / Selling the Peak
Player values overreact to news - injuries crater prices, hot streaks inflate them. Why it matters: a 24-year-old alpha coming off an ACL tear is the single best buy in dynasty, and a 30-year-old RB coming off a career year is the single best sell. The market always overweights the last 4 weeks.

Quick tip for beginners
The single biggest mistake new dynasty managers make is trading young wide receivers and rookie picks too cheaply to win now. Patience is the most valuable skill in dynasty. When in doubt, don't trade - the market always comes back around.

The tools out there show you a number. Two players, two values, a green check or a red X. But nobody plays in a vacuum. The number doesn't know your roster, your league, or whose window is closing.

So Mac learned to read the situation first - your team, your league, the manager across the table - for trades, and then for the nights leagues are actually won: the draft. Mock rooms that behave like your real league, bots with your friends' habits, auctions with real dollar values, and Mac advising every pick.
